Elan stood with his broad shoulder braced against one of the mirrors that lined the wall of the studio where she was giving her yoga class. It was one of several in the huge gym that the Guard and many of the people on San Amaro used. The building was nowhere near the palace and Elan’s office. She tried not to look at him as she finished up her workout, but her gaze was drawn to the big, tawny lion-shifter. It had been three days since she’d stormed out of his room, and as hurt as she’d been with him throwing her concern back in her face, she’d still missed him and wondered how he’d been doing. Which just made her feel all kinds of pathetic. She winced and tugged her hair out of its ponytail to let it fall forward and cover her face. The multitude of mirrors in this room reflected far more than she wanted anyone to see, let alone a man who made it clear she wasn’t welcome to anything in his life but an orgasm. Not even friendship for the short time she was here, which was really what stung the most. She’d begun to think of him as more than just a way to pass the time. She considered him a friend, and it hurt to realize he obviously didn’t feel the same. Why he’d bothered to tell her about his father was beyond her.
After her class, she made a beeline for the women’s locker room and hoped he’d be gone when she was done rinsing off the sweat. She didn’t bother to speculate why he was here—she knew it wasn’t for her, so it didn’t matter. No doubt he wanted to speak to Max or Kira, and then he’d be back to working himself into an early grave. A sad smile twisted Rhiannon’s lips. Maybe if Elan killed himself in the name of duty, he could stop feeling so damn guilty about his father killing himself for not doing his duty. She shook her head. It was so sad that a man like Elan, who was worshipped by the men and women he ruled, couldn’t see the good in himself or the wonderful things he’d accomplished. She wished there was something she could do to help him, but she wasn’t stupid enough to believe she could save a man who didn’t want saving. And she had enough problems of her own that she should focus on them instead of anyone else’s.
A few minutes in the shower, a quick brush through her hair, a change of clothes, and she was ready to go. She tucked her gym clothes into her locker, stepped out of the locker room, and took a breath to see if Elan had left. Nope, he was nearby, though with the muddying of scents as sweat permeated the building, she wasn’t sure where he was exactly. Peeking around the corner, she saw a straight shot to the exit. “Sweet.”
Her grin was more than a little triumphant as she jogged outside.
